Marist-Chicago Hosts 24 Students from Sister School in Barcelona
Students and faculty in the world languages department welcomed 24 students from our fellow Marist school in Barcelona, Spain on November 11.
The visiting students spent a week in Chicago as part of an annual exchange program between Marist-Chicago and Marist-Barcelona. Following the Barcelona students’ trip to the United States, Marist-Chicago students will travel to Spain in the spring.
While in Chicago, the students participated in many different activities. First, the students were invited to a welcome breakfast in the RedHawk cafeteria. Then, to get better acquainted with Marist’s campus, the Chicago students designed a scavenger hunt for the visiting students. As they looked for and found clues in different areas around campus, they were then lead to other clues in other places of campus, ultimately helping the students learn how to navigate around the school.
The students from Barcelona also took advantage of their proximity to the city. They each received a City Pass which gives visitors the ability to choose between exploring the Museum of Science and Industry, the Field Museum, and the Shedd Aquarium. While in the city, the group also attended both a Chicago Bulls basketball game and a Chicago Blackhawks hockey game. Back at Marist the group took part in a traditional soccer game, building some friendly rivalry with one team representing the United States and the other Spain.
The hosts hope that exposure to Marist Chicago and their local culture, including sports, food, music, and religion, during their time here helped in giving the students from Barcelona an unforgettable experience.
“Our students build friendships with students from another country, fellow Marist students, and then they will hopefully enjoy the same experience when they travel to Barcelona this spring,” world language chair Ms. Erica Nathan-Gamouf said. We hope so too!
