Saint Joseph's Academy Kicks Off Their National Day of Service Activities
On Saturday October 8, 2016 St. Joseph Academy began their participation in the upcoming Marist National Day of Service, which takes place on March 29, 2017. As a way to ensure that every student has the opportunity to participate in serving the least favored of their local community, St. Joseph is offering multiple service days for each class. On their first service day, over 90 students from the junior class at St. Joseph Academy volunteered at six different locations throughout Brownsville.
Victoria Zabarte, a junior Marist youth leader said “The students who come out here really want to help the community, and when youre volunteering, you also get to meet all different kinds of people.” Zabarte and fellow classmate Karolina Rodero spent their day cleaning up after children at the Children’s Museum of Brownsville. Other students volunteered at San Felipe de Jesus, the Farmer’s Market, the Brownsville Animal Shelter, Spanish Meadows and the Tip of Texas Zombie Run.
Rodero said she wanted to show people that everyone is loved and cared for, explaining that she has “grown up in Catholic school [her] whole life, and [she’s] seen what life is like for others without that advantage.” Rodero said, “I want them to feel loved. … Everyone likes feeling that.”
